BATTLE-SCENE FROM THE COMIC OPERATIC FANTASY THE SEAFARER |

It beguiles—
This little Odyssey
In ink and lavender
Over a surface of gently—
Graded turquoise tiles
That represent a sea
With chequered waves and gaily
Bear up the seafarer,
Gaily, gaily,
In his pink plume and armor.
A lantern-frail
Gondola of paper
Ferries the fishpond Sindbad
Who poises his pastel spear
Toward three pinky-purple
Monsters which uprear
Off the ocean-floor
With fanged and dreadful head.
Beware, beware
The whale, the shark, the squid.
But fins and scales
Of each scrolled sea-beast
Troll no slime, no weed.
They are polished for the joust,
They gleam like easter eggshells,
Rose and amethyst.
Ahab, fulfill your boast:
Bring home each storied head.
One thrust, one thrust,
One thrust: and they are sped.
So fables go.
And so all children sing
Their bathtub battles deep,
Hazardous and long,
But oh, sage grownups know
Sea-dragon for sofa, fang
For pasteboard, and siren-song
For fever in a sleep.
Laughing, laughing
Of graybeards wakes us up.

Encisadora
aquesta petita odissea
en rosa i lila
damunt una superfície de rajoles
d’un to suau difuminat turquesa
que representa el mar
amb ones quadriculades que alegrement
el mariner enlairen,
alegrement, alegrement,
amb la seva armadura i plomall rosa.
Com fràgil llanterna
és la gòndola de paper
on travessa la llacuna Simbad,
amb la seva llança color pastel
que apunta vers tres monstres
moradets i rosa que s’alcen
damunt de l’oceà
amb ullals als ferotges rostres
Alerta, alerta
a la balena, al tauró i al calamar.
Però aletes i escates
en cada bèstia gravades
no arrosseguen mala herba ni llot
ben polides per a la justa,
llueixen com ous de pasqua
color rosa i ametista.
Ahab, compleix el que proclames
duràs a casa tots aquests caps,
que d’un cop, d’un cop,
d’un cop: cauran dallats.
Així ho conten les faules.
I tots els infants canten les seves
fondes batalles dins la banyera,
llargues i arriscades
Però, oh, la sàvia gent adulta sap
que dragó de mar és sofà, ullal
cartró i cant de sirena
febre quan dormen i
rient, rient-nos
de barba-grisos ens despertem.
